“it’s not just a school, it’s a way of life” is undoubtedly the most famous expression students and alumni use to define Les Roches. You’ve probably heard it more than once if you know someone from the school.
Of course, when you apply to a higher education institution, the first thing you think of is likely to be the academic side. What do I want to learn? What is going to lead me to my dream career? But it should not be all you ask yourself when looking for a place to learn. Student life and the feeling you get while visiting your campus for the first time might be just as important. From the bonds you create to moving to a whole new country… these are truly what makes your journey exciting and memorable.
Here is what some of our students have shared with us about Les Roches, life on campus, important takeaways, and much more!
“I chose Les Roches Crans-Montana for its diversity. I love being surrounded by people who have a completely different background from mine and have had a completely different life experience. I feel like there is so much to learn from Les Roches’ multiculturality, it’s an amazing aspect to life at Les Roches.” – Chiara Vittone, Italy, Global Bachelor Program
“I have been working in the hospitality industry for a few years now and when I decided to pursue a masters, I was very specific about wanting a business degree from a hospitality school. Les Roches’ MBA program with a specialization in Global Hospitality Management was the perfect fit for me.” – Sandhya Rao Pochiraju, USA, MBA Program
“The beauty of the Alps, the vastness of Switzerland and all its neighboring countries provide amazing and unique travel opportunities. Drinking a cup of coffee and working with an amazing view to keep you company is very relaxing. However, sometimes I do miss the comforts of home, especially my Indian food!” – Sabah Mehta, India, Bachelor Program
“Studying in a place like Crans-Montana, right in the middle of the mountains is amazing! I have a passion for outdoor activities like skiing in winter and hiking during the summer. I also believe that waking up to this wonderful view of the mountains every morning helps me to start my day right.” – Chiara Vittone, Italy, Global Bachelor Program
“The student life here is unlike anything else in the world. Les Roches is truly a tight-knit community. Living in the mountains allows us to partake in unique activities. You can spend your weekend on the slopes or discovering Europe’s most picturesque locations with the school trips. After class, you can also join in some of the clubs (Wine Club, Green Club, etc.) or meet up with your friends at the student bar after a long day. Crans-Montana, although small, has many activities taking place throughout the year. One thing for sure is that you will never get bored of the views from the classroom.” – Arianna Lalwani, USA, Bachelor Program
“It allows you to build very strong connections and friendships with the whole community and you never feel lonely. You can easily find people that share your same passions and dreams, therefore allowing you to start building a strong future network. Moreover, I find it very enriching as you are surrounded by people from so many different nationalities, so you never stop learning something new every day.” – Gaia Aveta de Felice, Italy, Bachelor Program
“The most memorable moment I have encountered so far, was probably when I told my favorite teacher how everything had gone throughout the semester including what I had accomplished so far, and her respond was, ‘I am so proud of you.’” – Mandy Lin, Taiwan, Bachelor Program
“My biggest challenge was adjusting to a new way of life. Coming to Crans-Montana was a big change for me as a I grew up in big cities. But after a year here, I have definitely grown to love the mountain life and have taken advantage of the local activities that are available here.” – Arianna Lalwani, USA, Bachelor Program
“Studying at Les Roches taught me that there is more than one approach to resolving a situation. This school has taught me to look beyond the normality of things, to think out of the box, to be creative, and to take risks. This is my recipe for success!” – Chiara Vittone, Italy, Global Bachelor Program
“It’s never too late for education. I am married and in my 30s – my biggest fear about coming here was that I would be among students much younger than me. On the contrary, I found that there are several people just like me in my very own class.” – Sandhya Rao Pochiraju, USA, MBA Program
“The most important thing I realized is that to progress, your success completely depends on yourself. People can only help you if you put yourself out there and are proactive. Networking, experimenting and talking to students and alumni have all helped a lot!” – Sabah Mehta, India, Bachelor Program

“Despite economic uncertainties and higher rates of unemployment across sectors, not only hospitality, great organisations are not standing still but are transforming,” remarked Mr. Ekthana Faisaikram, Managing Director of Ekthana Hospitality Education Services Co., Ltd.

He believes that now is a decisive moment for those who dream of careers in hospitality:

This notion is also reflected by Ms. Thanatip Teera-aksonsit, alumnus of Les Roches International School of Hotel Management.

“Critical moments actually propel hotels to revolutionise. However, not all are able to rise to the occasion. Say you want to welcome more Thai customers. You have to be able to figure out what food to serve instead or how to train your employees to handle different expectations from guests. Successful hotels that are thriving now are manifesting sharp business acumen and resilience that stem from deep professional knowledge.”
A Les Roches MBA alumnus, Ms. Prin Xumsai Na Ayudhaya, recounted the first-class education she received:

“Switzerland is home of hospitality. Their focus on practical knowledge is absolutely unrivalled. Moreover, multiple field trips are available for you to really witness how the top-tier hotels are operating.”
Mr. Ekthana affirmed this observation: “These world-renowned Swiss schools such as Les Roches and Glion are professionally-run colleges. They hire experts in the industry to train their students to become professionals in the field. They invest in and are known for research and innovation which makes them trendsetters over the years.”
“We are an official partner and admissions office, and we take care of our students from step one, with their application and pre-departure preparation through to assistance during their studies and job prospects. We believe so much in Thai students’ potential and our mission is to push them to stand on the world stage,” said Mr. Ekthana.

Mr. Ekthana added that grants and scholarships in a range of categories, living expenses included, in various forms, are available.
“The only prerequisite is the aspiration to learn,” he said.

As 2020 began, MSc in Real Estate, Finance and Hotel Development student, Tanya Radu, was feeling confident about securing an internship or role after graduation. But as January moved into February and then March, the covid-19 pandemic brought uncertainty and frustration, and over 150 failed applications.
Following the advice of hospitality leaders, alumni and industry experts, Tanya embraced flexibility and acceptance in her mid-pandemic internship search.
“Three months ago I found myself in the position of not being able to attend classes anymore, interact with teachers and fellow students and expand my network by attending career fares and events,” she said.
“I started applying for multiple positions every day and found myself compelled to apply to different departments within real estate that I might not have previously considered. I also had to acknowledge and accept that the hospitality industry had taken one of the biggest blows and hence companies might not be looking for new employees.”

The blended classroom/real-world educational experience of a Glion Master’s proved essential in helping Tanya secure an internship, in what was one of the worst downturns hospitality has ever faced.
“After a period of one month of applying for more than 150 jobs, I finally received a phone call from a company called Altus Group, who invited me for a ‘virtual’ interview. After my initial interview with the internal recruiter, I was asked for a second interview with two managers.
“As the position I interviewed for was ‘Real Estate Valuation Intern’, my valuation class proved especially useful. As part of the interview, I was asked to complete an Excel test under a time constraint. I found the test to be straightforward, as our teachers had prepared us for it during our classes. Whilst on the call with them, I realised the extensive range of skills and knowledge I have gained through my studies at Glion.”

Putting academic knowledge to the test is a key component of Glion programs, for Tanya, every piece of classroom-gained expertise and ability came to bear while securing her internship.
“A week after the second interview, I was informed that I was offered the internship. Not only they were impressed with the range of skills I acquired during the academic component of my Masters, but I was also the only one out of the candidates that completed the Excel test 100% accurately.
“The achievement further confirmed to me that the MSc in Real Estate, Finance and Hotel Development is a well-rounded program that not only helped me secure an internship, but prepared me for my future professional life.”
Tanya’s top tips for securing an internship or job during a crisis

1. Apply a lot
2. Be flexible
3. Match your skills to the role
4. Use your resources!
5. Keep going

If there is one appropriate word to describe the Glion community, it would definitely be diverse. Our institution proudly celebrates the 93 nationalities represented on campus, sharing everyday experiences as we all learn from each other. BBA student, Rebecca De Keijzer, shares her view on the benefits and opportunities of studying in such a multicultural setting.
The unique beauty of Glion’s international campus environment is the opportunity to discover and appreciate so many different cultures. On average, there are approximately 22 different nationalities per classroom on campus, which allows students to learn the paramount skill of adapting to the diversity in the hospitality industry.

On the Glion campuses, you will come across students from all areas of Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa gracefully living together and integrating their cultures into one big international melting pot. The Glion learning environment provides students with multiple opportunities for interaction in classrooms, through group projects and discussions, and participation in multicultural campus events.
“I learned how to deal with different views, ideas and beliefs”
Aleksandra Vujasinovic, BBA semester 4 student recounted what she’s learned from Glion’s environment: “The diversity of students found on campus taught me a lot of things. I learned how to deal with different views, ideas, beliefs and ways of life. It hasn’t changed me, but rather pushed me, causing me to grow and understand everybody around me.”
“I became more accepting, patient, and considerate of those paths that are different than mine. Glion provides an environment that makes each student aware and sensitive towards human and cultural differences.”

The hospitality industry is extremely diverse and dynamic, with international employees working closely together towards one goal. To prepare students for cultural differences and language barriers in their professional careers, Glion provides endless opportunities to collaborate and use these differences to their advantage.
Important skills that are beneficial in the hospitality business include innovation, productivity, and communication, all of which are increased by the exposure to people with varied and different backgrounds. Ali Hafid, who is undergoing his Master’s course in International Hospitality Business, says: “I feel that learning in such a diverse environment, with people who come from different parts of the world and have different backgrounds, has given me a more open-minded perspective to both academic and life lessons”.

In addition to the academic and professional skills that students develop during their multicultural experiences at Glion, great opportunities for leisure are presented too. Students build connections and make friends from all over the world, this encourages them to travel and explore different locations, cultures and values.
All in all, one promise that can be made to any student considering the Glion experience for themselves is that, as well as the enormous professional and academic benefits of studying in such a uniquely diverse environment, great enjoyment will also come out of it.

For each of the last four years, Switzerland has been ranked the World’s Best Country by the influential U.S. News & World Report. In the 2020 rankings, Switzerland finished ahead of runner-up Canada, thanks to a collection of strong top ten placings in categories such as education and quality of life.

An in-depth analysis of 200 countries has ranked Switzerland the number one safest country in the world for COVID-19. The research was carried out by data-driven investment company Deep Knowledge Group (DKG) and used 11,400 data points, across a wide range of parameters.

Switzerland’s world-leading COVID-19 response means restrictions in areas such as education, hospitality and leisure are now eased. Swiss borders to most of Europe are open, as are hotels, restaurants and bars. Visitors can feel extra safe thanks to the countrywide “Clean & Safe” campaign, with its strict new cleanliness protocols.

Thanks to a package of restrictions introduced by the government, Switzerland has got COVID-19 well under control. Even as restrictions ease, new COVID-19 cases have remained well below 100 per day countrywide. That’s out of a population of more than 8.5 million.

As an international student in Switzerland, you’ll be part of a multinational community that makes up a quarter of all higher education students in the country. Today, there are some 700 degrees taught in English – including those at Glion and Les Roches! We think Switzerland has unbeatable attractions for international students.

According to the eighth World Happiness Report, published in March this year, Switzerland is ranked third in the world for happiness, behind only Finland and Denmark.

Switzerland is the safest country in the world right now for COVID-19. South Sudan is, according to a massive 250-page report, the most dangerous nation.
The United States?
It ranks number 58, just behind Romania, and two places ahead of Russia.
The report is based on 130 quantitative and qualitative parameters and over 11,400 data points in categories like quarantine efficiency, monitoring and detection, health readiness, and government efficiency. It’s by the Deep Knowledge Group, a consortium of companies and nonprofits owned by Deep Knowledge Ventures, an investment firm founded in 2014 in Hong Kong.
Interestingly, there’s been significant change in the safety rankings through the months of the pandemic.
Initially, countries that could react quickly to crises and had high levels of emergency preparedness ranked highest. Now countries with resilient economies are ranking higher.
“Switzerland and Germany achieve the #1 and #2 positions in this new special case study specifically because of their economy’s resilience, and due to the careful ways in which they are attempting to relax lockdown and economic freezing mandates in a fact and science-based manner, without sacrificing public health and safety,” the study says.
Here are the top 100 countries by COVID-19 safety, according to the Deep Knowledge Group:
It’s important to note that this is just one organization’s assessment of risk, and that risk within different regions inside nations will differ as well. For example, New York City was an epicenter of COVID-19 risk a month ago, while Montana stayed, relatively speaking, much safer.
The highest-risk regions right now, according to the report are Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, as well as some countries in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
